What to ask prospective caterers when you want to go green

Back to Checklists

  • Are you experienced with sourcing organic ingredients and beverages for large events?
  • Can you get the foods we want locally? (Alternately, what substitute foods can be found locally in the quantities we need?)
  • For foods that can’t be found certified organic, can you source pesticide-free options?
-Are you experienced at preparing vegetarian/vegan foods (or sourcing free range organic meats/sustainably harvested seafood)?
  • Can you provide organic, fair trade tea and coffee with our desserts?
  • Can you provide fair trade chocolate for our desserts?
  • For items that can’t be sourced with organic, local, and/or fair trade foods, will you offer us a discount if we provide them ourselves? (In the case of wine, beers, or champagne, are additional corking fees charged if we provide these items ourselves?)
  • Will you use cloth napkins and tablecloths, and real glasses, tableware, and silverware for all courses?
  • What will you do with the leftovers? (Most caterers will donate them to a charity or package them for you to take home, but you sometimes must ask.)
